Santiago League Round 2: Cupes hand first defeat to GUG

There were only 2 rounds played so far and it's still very beginning of the Regular Season in Santiago League. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of GUG against Cupes on Sunday night. Cupes were defeated by Cupes 91-86. Cupes dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to GUG's 34. Cupes forced 22 GUG turnovers. The best player for the winners was center Luis Santos (203-94, college: St.Louis) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Juan Miguel Suero (196-93) chipped in 16 points and 6 assists. Forward Juan Guerrero (205-93, agency: BMS Sport Agency) produced a double-double by scoring 19 points and 16 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) for Cupes. Cupes' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Santiago CPN.

Gerardo Suero contributed with 28 points for the winners. American Cameron Lard (206-97, college: Iowa St., agency: BMS Sport Agency) replied with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists for Plaza. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. CPN's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Santiago to the arena Cupes.



CPN - Plaza 108-101

The game with biggest result difference took place in Santiago. Local CPN beat Plaza 108-101. It was a great shooting night for CPN especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 55.6 percentage. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. Plaza was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. Victor Liz (193-86, agency: BMS Sport Agency) orchestrated the victory by scoring 23 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!). Naturalized American guard Gerardo Suero (196-89, college: Albany, agency: BIG) contributed with 28 points for the winners. American Cameron Lard (206-97, college: Iowa St., agency: BMS Sport Agency) replied with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists and guard Oliver Garcia (188-96) added 29 points and 6 assists in the effort for Plaza. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.
